According to Boyce, there is a large recess formed from heavy masonry walls (in the centre of the photo).
Fiorelli called it simply a recess to contain a cupboard, but Breton thought it was the lararium.
According to Boyce, it may well have been a lararium.

VIII.3.18 Pompeii. May 2010. Doorway from atrium to rooms in north-east corner, leading to peristyle near VIII.3.16.
Found in the north ala, (the room on the left in the front of the photo), was a painting showing a sitting male figure with a female figure.
This was thought to be Diana (see Helbig 257) or perhaps Atalanta with Meleager, according to Schefold, but nothing now remains of it.
The house was named from the painting of Diana.

According to Eschebach, this doorway would have led to rear rooms surrounding the peristyle area, also reached from VIII.3.16.
She described them as – doorway from atrium leading into tablinum at rear of north ala; nearby was a corridor leading to the three-sided peristyle garden; on the north side of the corridor was a courtyard or yard; a well; latrine; stairs to upper rooms; and a large room in the north-east corner of the peristyle; in the south-west corner of the peristyle was a kitchen hearth and a niche latrine.
